Michael Hays completed his BFA in illustration at Rhode Island School of Design in 1979. There he studied with children's book illustrators Chris Van Allsburg (Jumanji) and David Macaulay (The Way Things Work). In the early 1980s Michael illustrated his first young adult book jackets for major New York publishers such as Atheneum, Pantheon, Harper & Row and Macmillan. In 1981 Michael began working with Pete Seeger on the picture book Abiyoyo, based on Pete's story adaptation of a South African lullaby. 18 years later the two of them worked together on Abiyoyo Returns (Simon and Schuster 2001). Today Michael lives and works in Chicago. He was a founding member of the Graphic Artists Guild Chicago Chapter. Since 1989 he has taught children's book illustration and figure drawing at Columbia College. He also visits elementary schools to present a slide talk and storytelling performance explaining the illustration process.

Michael's artwork now appears on over 70 young adult book jackets and in 19 picture books including:
Abiyoyo by Pete Seeger, Simon and Schuster 1986 (Redbook Magazine’s 1986 top 10 picture books and PBS Reading Rainbow book); Three Wishes by Lucille Clifton, Bantam Doubleday Dell 1992 (KCET Storytime book); Jonathan and His Mommy by Irene Smalls, Little Brown and Company 1992 (KCET Storytime book); The Hundredth Name by Shulamith Levey Oppenheim, Boyds Mills Press 1995; Kevin and His Dad by Irene Smalls, Little Brown and Company 1999; The History of Counting by Denise Schmandt-Besserat, William Morrow 1999; Abiyoyo Returns by Pete Seeger and Paul Dubois Jacobs, Simon and Schuster 2001; and The Boy Who Was Generous with Salt by Corinne Demas, Marshall Cavendish 2002.
